The World is Flat

This post is not funny or really interesting to anyone but me. It is just a release of frustration that may seem small to some. I had the good intention this morning to take Jake to school instead of making him ride the Bluebird Special. I went out to warm up the Nissan Sentra Turbo leaving Jake instructions to get the garbage to take outside and meet me at the car. I waited and waited but we all know that 13 year olds move at the speed of drunk turtles. Jake finally gets in the car and as we pull out he tells me it took him so long because he was making his sandwich for his lunch. Just as he says that he realizes that he forgot his lunch. In a fit of aggravation I pulled back to the driveway only to notice the low tire-pressure light glowing fiendishly in the dash.  I get out and look at the front driver side tire and there in the sidewall is a two inch cut. The tire is not completely flat but well on it’s way. I inform Jake that he needs to partake of the County Greyhound because this was going to be a bad day for daddy.  I came back in the house and just sat here being mad at all that is the world. Then, I start the internet tire search to locate the best deal. After a few sites I determined that Sam’s was the way to go. I called them to make sure they had it in stock at the internet price. All checked out.

I filled the tire with air in hopes of just making it to Sam’s without ever having to actually change it. In my line of work I have already changed my fair share of tires and I avoid this when possible. I made it to Sam’s with no problems and for that I am thankful. I tried to enter the front door but I find out that Sam’s is only open for Business Card Holders from 8 to 10. Did the man on the phone tell me that when I called earlier? Not!!!  So I waited the twenty minutes and then I was let in to the precious domain that is Sam’s. I traveled to the Tire and Battery center where I found no one. After a few minutes I heard a few grunts and groans and determined that I needed to locate assistance myself instead of waiting. Tracking the noise I found the Sam’s Associate who was stacking tires. OK, he was doing his job, no fuss there. However, he was none too excited about me interrupting his tire wall building and his attitude was not really killing me softly. We worked out the details and I paid and yes……waited. It took about 45 minutes to have this one tire put on but I expect that. Referring back to my line of work I am well accustomed to waiting on vehicles to be fixed. I retrieved my key and my receipt and I was off.

That’s it. No blood, no murder, no trips to the hospital or even a manual tire change. It still wasn’t fun. In November I have both Jake and Michele’s birthdays to think about along with Christmas around the corner. This was just money I didn’t want to spend at this particular time. That’s all I have to say about that!

Review of Samsung Alias 2

SS2 closeed

I came across the Alias 2 by pure accident. I was a long time loyal Alltel customer when Verizon decided to buy Alltel in the Albany, Ga market. After many calls to Verizon I finally convinced the nice lady at 611 that I needed an upgraded phone since I was a new Verizon customer not by my choosing. She set-up my account so I get both of my lines upgraded with $30 off of each new phone. That was music to my ears because I am a tech-junkie and any time I get a new gadget I am happy once again. With Jake’s birthday and Christmas coming up that gave me another option for a present for him.

Inside:

After hanging up with 611 lady I headed to Verizon with a spring in my not-so-lite step. I had every intention on getting an Envy 2. I had done a little research on it and it seemed to be getting good reviews. I loved the “open me  up for a full keyboard” theme. At the time I had a Motorola Krzr Km1 but I hated texting with that old simple dial pad.  Before the Krzr I had a Motorola Q9c. I had no complaints about that phone but the smart-phone data package was killing me every month. It was time for a change.

As I walked into the store I was met by sales dude who swore up and down there was no way I was upgrading two phones early with $30 off. Yes, a challenge. After plugging my info in the computer I got my assigned salesman. Very long story short I walked out with my Samsung Alias 2. Reserving the option for the second upgrade later if I wanted it. The main reason, they didn’t offer the Envy 2 anymore and it would have cost another $50 for the Envy 3. NOT!!! The Alias fit my little budget and with the extra money off it was perfect. It also had a $50 mail-in rebate. Good to me!!

So I get in the car at Verizon and being the geek I am I started going through it. The multi-flip  design is brilliant.  I love a flip phone for its traditional feel while you’re talking and the side flip with the full  Qwerty keyboard makes it perfect for texting and email. The “ink” keys are a wonderful idea and that makes this whole design come together.  While we are on keys, one of the most refreshing ideas ever is the one-key functions. In both phone flip and text flip  you have dedicated buttons for speakerphone, bluetooth,  voice-mail, camera, texting, alarm, games and vibrate mode. That makes life so simple when you can just hit one key to do all of  these functions without having  to dig  through menu after sub-menu after sub-sub-menu. After a month with this phone I can tell you that I absolutely love it. I have four email accounts linked to it. The camera is pretty good. It is 2 megapixel which is just OK. I didn’t buy it for picture-taking. With Verizon’s Mobile Web I have internet access with pretty fast email even though it’s not push email. There is a pre-installed program that with give you push email using a Microsoft Exchange Server but that little jewel costs $10 a month. I just don’t need it that bad. The phone is not a smart-phone so I don’t have broadband but  the Mobile Web does just fine for me.

Outside:

Like the Krzr it has the music play static buttons on the outside so you can load music on the phone and play it back. The phone has two speakers and sounds pretty good for a phone. It has a slot for a Micro-SD card but I haven’t even come close to filling up the internal phone memory. It has a jack for a headset located in a convenient spot up on the top left corner. The is a button on the side to lock/unlock the music buttons. Like most phones it has a volume up/down button on the left side. Another refreshing idea is the power button located on the right side. The flip has to be open for it to work so there aren’t accidental power offs. The charger/USB  port is located just under the headphone jack. The only color I have seen this phone come in is Titanium. It looks good to me. I must be honest and say that the battery cover is hard to operate and it feels flimsy. That is really the only con I have found with the phone.

I read other reviews of this phone and quite a lot mention that the Alias 2 has poor battery life. I have not experienced that yet but the phone is only a month old. I haven’t included any tech specs for you because this post is just my opinion. I would highly recommend this phone but to each his own.

Lowering The Ears

Getting a haircut is not much to blog about I know but it’s really all I have done today. I did make a quick trip to the grocery store for just a few things and of course I forgot one of the most important items. We are having spaghetti (thank you spell check) and I forgot the garlic bread. I bought the hamburger meat for the sauce and patties for tomorrow night’s hamburger simplicity and a plethora of other things but clearly exited the establishment without the butter filled fattening necessity garlic bread. I know, how could I?!?!? A quick text message to Michele has since solved yet another conundrum.  She will pick it up on the way home from work like the excellent mom and wife that she is. I call her wife because at this point that’s how we act, married. I mean that in the best most loving way. OK, the haircut. I traveled to the location where I have been several times since my migration to Albany by way of the bank.  Nothing happened at the bank, thank God. As I entered, a nice lady, who we will affectionately call Velma,  was sitting in her barber/styling chair reading a magazine. Make no mistake this is not her real name, at least I hope not but it fits her to a T. The gentleman who usually cuts my hair was busy rounding off a flat-top of some poor unsuspecting victim who was already strapped in. But as south Georgia barbershop etiquette goes, you wait on the same old man who always cuts your hair no matter how many other available barbers/stylists there are.  Wait, I did. As the victim emerged from the chair I noticed the glance in the mirror he gave that soon came with a facial expression of grim despair. He quickly paid and was off like maybe his taco lunch had called his name with a  bull horn. I was directed in the chair and gave in willingly. This gentleman  has cut my hair fives times now but always needs a quick rundown on how I want it. If you don’t know me it’s, well, SHORT!!! There is no style to my hair. If I was in shape and could dislocate my shoulders I could reach around and cut it myself. As I instructed him with the complicated style that is mine Velma says to my barber, “I need to learn how to do a cut like that, that’s the only haircut I don’t k now how to do”.  This statement would normally be sad in my mind because of the simplicity in cutting my hair. If you can turn on the clippers and navigate your way around my Beldar like cone-head you’re doing fine. However, for reasons unknown to you, the unfortunate reader, I have deeper concerns. As I stated, this is the fifth time this man has laid clippers to my crown but this is the sixth visit to this particular rodeo. The first visit to this fine establishment was back in the summer and guess who got the tip that day, yes, you’re the lucky winner, Velma.   She cut my hair the very first time I went there. Amazingly enough, she did a great job!! I only wait for the old man because that’s what a south Georgia boy is supposed to do. NO MATTER WHAT!!! So she cuts my hair the very first trip there but now she wants training on how to cut my hair. Does anyone else see a problem with this? Again, if you don’t know me, how lucky you are, but I can’t stand obvious things like this. I’m not polite enough to just let it go. With a concerned but joking tone I called her out. I explained to her that she has already cut my hair and did a good job. Yes, the room was silent. I’m bad about putting people on the spot but I do like the company in that uncomfortable space. The old man just laughed and Velma scrambled for a reply.  She came up with one but it was an obvious attempt at a cover up. She said that she wanted to learn how to do a flat-top. A flat-top?!?! My cone-head can’t hold a flat-top. They didn’t call me “Beldar” in school for nothing! Anyway, I let her have her excuse and said nothing but kind words about her previous attempt. It was about this time the old man said he was done skinning me, I mean cutting my hair and he let me out of the harness, I mean barber chair. I gave the the same glance into the mirror as the earlier fella and formed the same grimace. I too, left like it was beans and rice for lunch. Now, I understood.

A Day of Learning

images

I have always been a tech geek but I must admit I have fallen behind. My part-time job I had for 8 years with a Motorola dealer kept me up to date with hard-core electronics. I learned volumes about radios and the systems that nurse them. I am sorely behind on computer code and software. I started this blog/site today because of boredom and I have learned so much. I am using this site because I am just not ready to host anything on my own just yet. I am afraid I would cause a power grid failure in Montana or something.  My site is new and boring but it’s been my baby just about all day. I will get better and it will appear more professional than the Mr. Rogers/Sesame St. look it has now. Thanks Marc for your help and suggestions.

The Family Story

Michele and I found each other through work back in August of 2007. At first we were just occasional coworkers. It wasn’t until Christmas of 2008 that we realized that there was so much more. We got engaged May 20th on a rainy Friday night. With each of us came the children. Jacob (Jake) is my son and Sarah (Skedaddle) is Michele’s daughter. Jake and I moved to Albany with Michele and Sarah in July. The children seemed fine with the union. Actually, they seemed indifferent at first. When Sarah was told the news about our engagement, her response was, ”Cool, can I get a Facebook page?” Jake took to Michele and Sarah quickly. They have all managed to deal with “Brady Bunch” situation wonderfully. Make no mistake, there are battles but I am pleasantly surprised how well everyone has adjusted. There has been no bloodshed or fires since the move. Michele already had the two cats, Fuzz and Bud. We are getting a West Highland Terrier puppy in December. She has already been picked out. She will be Daphne. Sometime in the next year I would like to get a Boston Terrier puppy. Michele and I are getting married March 27th 2010. That sums us up for now. Take it easy or don’t take it at all. Stay tuned.

First Time…..be gentle.

This is my first blog ever. I am usually up to date with anything dealing with computers but expressing myself is something that I find hard to do. I am sitting here at home with my son Jacob. Jacob says he is sick today so here we are both with laptops burning up bandwidth. I came to this site with intentions on building a website. A friend of mine suggested it but I got started with the blog. So far so good.  I am going to post this now and continue on to find the site building tools. Have a good day everybody.
